Chocolate Toxicity Guide

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. Dogs metabolize these substances much more slowly than humans, allowing them to build up to dangerous levels in their system.

The severity depends on:

  • Type of chocolate (darker = more dangerous)
  • Amount consumed relative to the dog's size
  • The dog's individual sensitivity
  • Time since ingestion (faster treatment = better outcome)
Did You Know? Theobromine is similar to caffeine and affects dogs' central nervous systems and heart muscles.
