About Cephalexin for Dogs
Cephalexin (brand name Keflex) is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that treats bacterial infections in dogs including:
- Skin infections (pyoderma)
- Urinary tract infections
- Respiratory infections
- Ear infections (otitis externa)
- Wound infections
It works by interfering with bacterial cell wall formation, effectively killing susceptible bacteria.
While generally safe, Cephalexin may cause:
- Common: Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite
- Rare: Allergic reactions (facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing)
- Precautions: Use cautiously in pets with kidney disease or penicillin allergies
